A.C.B., that’s Amy Coney Barrett.
HEARING, that’s the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on President Trump’s nominee to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court.
Day One, that’s the first day of the exposure of the absurd (maybe some even criminal) comments, tirades, of the Democrat members of the committee. And the very thoughtful and intelligent comments of the Republican members of the committee.
It must be noted first that A.C.B. sat solemnly without displaying any facial expressions or body language through the entire hearing. No visible effect of the slings and arrows from any one of the Democrats. Complete control.
Now, the committee members. The Democrats, EVERY ONE OF THEM, did not, repeat, DID NOT, make one comment about A.C.B.’s qualifications to be Associate Justice. Instead, every Democrat spewed diatribes about one policy or another. Amy Klobuchar, Democrat from Minnesota was a partner in two, yup, TWO, law firms before she was County Attorney for Hennepin County, Minnesota, and then-Senator since 2007. You would think that all that experience in the legal world would prevent her from making stupid and possibly criminal comments in such a public forum and part of the written Senate record.
Evidently not.
Some of what she said, quote, “I’m here to do my job. Tell the truth. This hearing is a sham. Truth doesn’t matter to the President”. And that ain’t all she said. Chris Coons, Democrat from Delaware. Has a law degree. Experience in legal matters. But still willing to make questionable comments. Like, “I’ve been flooded with calls to stop this nomination.”
Flooded? Doubtful.
He states there is no precedent. But there is precedent. And he has to know it. But is willing to make that false statement for the record. Senator Coons claims that A.C.B. is only nominated to rule against the A.C.A. Yes. He said it. But he doesn’t know that’s the only, or any, reason. If Senator Coons is as smart as he claims to be, he would have made at least some minimum comments about the A.C.B. qualifications.
Richard Blumenthal, Democrat from Connecticut, is another example of the way Democrats disgraced themselves today. He’s the guy with a legal background who made public claims about his military service in Viet Nam. Got caught in the lie. He told A.C.B. “you were only nominated to repeal A.C.A.”. How the hell does he know? He doesn’t. It’s another lie. He told A.C.B. “Your originalism is a smokescreen.” He said, “President Trump is responsible for fifty-five thousand deaths in the next three months.”
Senator Blumenthal looked straight at A.C.B. and said, “ You must recuse yourself.”. WHAT? Senator Mazie Hirona, Senator Cory Booker, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Senator Kamala Harris and all the other Democrats on the committee were just as pathetic, some even worse.
What about the Republicans?
Well, they all talked about qualifications. Not one said anything about policy. None speculated on the purpose of the A.C.B. nomination. Other than to fill a vacancy with a qualified person. Notably, Senator Michael Crapo, from Idaho spent his time setting the record straight, fact-checking the Democrat false and untrue statements.
Also notable was Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana left his usual colorful verbal print, “Congress has ceded power to “giant rogue beasts’ (bureaucrats).”
And possibly most notable was Senator Mike Lee, from Utah. He delivered a super-intelligent commentary without ever halting or referring to notes. Apparently extemporaneous. Just a magnificent performance. And all the other Republicans were spot on with their comments confined to the matter at hand. Not one Republican used the hearing as a platform to spew a bunch of garbage like every one of the Democrats.
Stay tuned for Day Two.
